DeeAnn Kjelshus
Equine Artist

Bosco and RioHorses have always been a passion for North Dakota native DeeAnn Kjelshus. With an exceptional eye for capturing personality, realism and beauty, she always strives to create sculptures with a high level of correctness as well as intricate detail.

DeeAnn creates these realistic horse sculptures using a variety of mediums including Apoxie, Super Sculpey, and non hardening clay. Using oils, acrylic, pastels, colored pencil or watercolors she completes each sculpture with a photo realistic paint job which makes them look as though they could take a breath and spring to life.

On her artistic journey DeeAnn taught herself how to sculpt and paint. After years of trail and error DeeAnn was excited to study under the talented Lynn Fraley when she took her Wire to Whinny Clinic. DeeAnn also holds a Bachelors of Art , in Graphic Arts.

With eighteen limited editions to date, DeeAnn has enjoyed great success having sold-out all of those editions. Her horses are collected around the world from the United States and Canada to many parts of Europe , largely in Germany, and also in Australia. In 1996 she was commissioned to sculpt a horse for the Grand Champions toy company which was made into a toy enjoyed by children. Her sculptures have been featured on numerous magazines covers including Horsing Around and The Hobby Horse News .

Her husband, actor Nate Johnson , DeeAnn and their little girl , Lilia Ann, and their two cats, Bosco and Rio, currently reside on the north side of Chicago . As Nate pursues his acting endeavors, DeeAnn enjoys the spoils of city life including the multiple facets of artistic outlets the city offers. Outside of her equine art, DeeAnn works as a Graphic Artist and also enjoys trying her hand at exploring new skills including ceramics, mosaic, hand-made jewelry, wire horses and painting.

“My lifelong love of horses is what drives and inspires my art. I'm fascinated by the grace and power a horses possess. They seem to have a freedom that inspires us, as humans, to dream. As an artist, I revel in trying to capture those dreams in three dimensional form.”
